Three Great Oily Skin Care Products

September 26, 2009

oily-skin-care-girl-washing-face.jpgNot happy with your oily skin and desperately looking for oily skin care products? Relax! Oily skin actually has some great advantages! People with oily skin tend to develop fewer wrinkles as they age, which, by the way, is a good thing! They also have skin that has a plumper, fresher look. Hey, that’s another good thing! Though people with oily skin often develop shiny patches on their faces only a few hours after washing, there are several wonderful oily skin products on the market that can help to keep the oil in control and your skin looking fresh and beautiful!

Three Great Oily Skin Care Products

Choosing skin care products can be quite confusing. After all, the skin care market is HUGE! With all of the choices available it is often difficult to figure out which skin care product is best for you. From organic skin care products to products such as Oil of Olay and L’Oreal Paris (both of which have been available for years), more often than not you will have to try and try again before finding the skin care solution that is best for your skin type (and actually works!). When it comes to oily skin, there are several skin care products that you may want to try. Again, finding the perfect skin care product may be hit or miss at first…but stick with it…eventually, you will find the perfect product for you!

First up, Cetaphil Oily Skin Cleanser! Cetaphil, which is part of the Galderma Laboratory family, has been around for quite some time. Galderma Laboratory, which was founded in 1981, is a Swiss pharmaceutical company that specializes in the research, development and of course, the marketing of skin care products including those with oily skin care in mind. They are a leading player in the world of skin care and are always moving forward when it comes to the research and development of new products. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and Gentle Skin Cleansing Bars are wonderful for people that have oily skin, problems with acne and even skin issues such as eczema and skin allergies. Cetaphil is one of the BEST drugstore finds if you are looking for an oily skin treatment and need a solution! For even better prices, skip the drugstore and do an online search!

oily-skin-care-products-clarifiance-oil-free-cleanser.jpgNext up, Lancome Clarifiance Oil-Free Gel Cleanser! Though this skin care product for oily skin will cost you a little bit more than Cetaphil, it is well worth the investment! After all, having beautiful skin is worth it, wouldn’t you agree!? Don’t go looking for Clarifiance at your local drugstore because you won’t find it! Lancôme Clarifiance Oil-Free Gel Cleanser is only available at fine department and cosmetic stores (such as Macy’s and Sephora). This light, oil free gel foams into a silky mousse that glides onto the skin and feels, well, simply luxurious! It is well formulated, whisper light, and has special cleansing agents perfect for people that are battling oily skin. Clarifiance will leave your skin feeling refreshed and best of all, no oily residue is ever left behind! Of course, Lancôme has all of their products tested by dermatologists so you know you are getting a safe, grade-A, skin care product! Again, for the best prices, do an internet search as the market is highly competitive.

Last but not least, Clarins Purifying Cleansing Gel for Oily Skin. Clarins is another well known and trusted skin care company that specializes not only skin care but fragrances as well. Founded by medical student Jacques Courtin-Clarins in 1954, this company not only offers all types of skin care products for women, they have an entire men’s skin care line as well. Clarin’s Purifying Cleansing Gel for Oily Skin attacks the oil on your face but NEVER leaves it feeling dry. This gel cleanser refreshes the skin and is alcohol free. Clarins can be purchased at fine department and cosmetic stores as well as on the world-wide- web!

Though oily skin can be an annoying and embarrassing, it can be controlled! If you are in need of oily skin care, it is important that you implement a program into your daily life and stick to it! Finding your perfect oily skin care products may be difficult, but don’t give up. There are MANY different types of products on the market (such as the ones mentioned above). It may take a while before you find the one that works best for your skin type…but don’t worry there is one out there and you WILL find it!  The good news is, is that as you age, your skin naturally dries out (which means less oil). See, there’s always a silver lining in every situation….even when it comes to oily skin!

Good luck, and thanks for reading!

Kiehl’s Skin Care for Men

August 17, 2009

kiehls_anti_wrinkle_cream.jpgSo you’re a man and you’ve decided to dispense with childish hang-ups and accepted it is time to take better care of your skin. Perhaps you want to look younger and more vibrant so you can be more competitive in a challenging job market full of young bucks trying to make their mark. Perhaps you look older than your years and just want an age-appropriate appearance. Or, maybe, you’ve found yourself in the dating world again and would really like to put your best foot forward. In a nation with a 50% divorce rate, that probably represents a lot of men.Whether your motivation is vanity, professional growth, feeling or looking better, men these days find themselves challenged not so much by their hang-ups than by their lack of education. Unlike the ladies, we aren’t indoctrinated into a world of beauty products at an early age. The closest we may get in our youth is acne fighting skin care products. Beyond that, though, we’re usually clueless. So where do we turn when we finally wise up and decide to actually do something about our skin?

We also tend to have some strict requirements in mind when we shop. Still embarrassed at the concept, we want our products to be non-descript or blatantly manly. No flowers on the containers for us, thank you. We want our stuff to either be bland, manly or to imply that we’ll be ravished by women should we use it. While I’ve yet to find a good skin care product for men that implies super models will rip our clothes off on first sight, I did have some luck in finding men’s skin care products that deliver on the non-descript element. For example, Kiehl’s skin care products for men deliver in this area. But they come with some more relevant assets beyond their packaging.

While there are any number of skin care products out there promising magical results, I suspect many people find themselves eventually disappointed. The proof of a solid, reliable and trustworthy company is often found in its longevity and this is why I’m devoting my first post on skin care products for men by singling out Kiehl. This company has been around since 1851, folks. You’ll be hard-pressed to find anything else out there that can top that, let alone top it and fill other criteria important to men.

I also give Kiehl’s skin care products points in the cost department. I won’t lie to you. You can find cheaper products on your grocery store shelves, but you know the old saying that you get what you pay for. A proven and respected industry leader such as Kiehl’s puts a name you can believe in behind proven products that have kept them in business for over a century and a half. Do you think some bargain basement product you pick up at the grocery store can match that? Besides, those of you who don’t want to be caught dead with any kind of “beauty” products in your hands would rather shop for men’s skin care products online anyway, wouldn’t you? God knows I do (I’m not quite as evolved and enlightened as writing this blog might have you believe).

Now the obvious question is what can Kiehl’s do for you? Kiehl’s offers a wide variety of solutions for just about every need including and beyond skin care. In fact, their selection is so well conceived they even have an All-Sport Swimmer’s Cleansing Rinse for Hair and Body which “neutralizes odor and drying effects of chlorine.” But since we’re discussing men’s skin care products, Kiehl’s is an excellent source for hand salve’s your wife will appreciate (rough hands may be manly but she’ll love you for a softer touch). They also sell made-for men soaps that exfoliate, incredible pre and after shaves for a baby-smooth, razor bump and oil free face and a variety of post-shave facial products that will wake up, hydrate and invigorate your face, as well as reduce wrinkles. Tell me shaving a few years off your appearance doesn’t sound good to you.

So there you have it, guys. If you’re interested in men’s skin care products, you can’t go wrong starting with an indoctrination into the world of better looking skin than by giving Kiehl’s skin care products a shot. As of this writing, Kiehl’s throws in 3 free samples with every purchase, allowing you to try additional products you might like. And guess what… you get to PICK the samples so you don’t have to worry about getting some random garbage you don’t have any use for. I love a great deal. You will too! So why are you still reading this? Get to it already.

Do Men Need Skin Care Products?

August 16, 2009

The short answer is yes, if you care about your skin’s health or how you look. In my previous post, The Evolution of Men’s Skin Care, I tried to set your mind at ease by pointing out that the use of men’s skin care products is far more prevalent and accepted today than ever before. But, being new to the game, most men are ill-equipped to make informed decisions about their skin care. Sometimes we make bad decisions.

Some of you gentlemen may be wondering if you couldn’t get away with just using your wife’s or girlfriend’s skin care products. Men, you may have noticed that there are some differences between us and the ladies and I’m not just talking about the naughty bits. Aside from those obvious parts, we also happen to have very different body chemistry. Not only may her skin care products not work for you, they may have less than desirable effects such as over-drying your skin. Unless you are a chemist specializing in skin care, don’t take chances. Buy skin care products for men. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about some skin care needs we have in common with the fairer sex.

Acne is a shared complaint by both genders. This embarrassing and often painful ailment is universally distressing and crops up at the worst possible times with no regard for sex (or plans for sex, for that matter). If you’ve suffered from it, you know just how frustrating it can be. The bad news, folks, is that acne isn’t just a problem suffered by teens. While, yes, they represent the larger portion of society struggling with acne, there are plenty people who cope with adult acne every day.

Often associated with acne and another skin problem shared by both sexes is oily skin. While not necessarily a bad thing (oil is naturally produced by your skin) excessive oil and the failure to manage it or cleanse effectively can lead to black heads and acne. There are many cleansers designed specifically to remove excess oil, but you shouldn’t skimp here. Carefully designed products will help you manage oily skin properly without stripping your face entirely of oil. Overdoing it can lead to dry, irritated skin which is no less pleasant to look at than excessively oily skin.

We also both suffer equally from damage to our skin from the Sun and from pollutants. Fortunately there are products for both men and women that can defend against such damage and even reverse it! My next post on skin care products for men will help guide you to one of the first companies you should try as you delve into the world of men’s skin care, but for now recognize that the sun and environmental influences can and do cause your skin problems just as they do for women.

Diet can result in healthier skin and we’re all equally vulnerable to bad results from the consumption of unhealthy foods and inadequate hydration. Likewise smoking, stress, bad sleep habits all take their toll on both genders equally. And, finally, there’s age; the one assault on our skin none of us are immune to.

Perhaps the only real skin care concern we don’t share with women is the result make up has in clogging pores and the importance of its removal. But we’re just as susceptible to just about every other problem they face without the years of practice in preventing or diminishing the damage.

With so many enemies on so many sides doing so much to diminish our skin’s appearance, the question shouldn’t be “do men need skin care products,” it should be “where do I start!?” Well, we’ll get to that in our very next post on particular skin care products for men I think you’ll be very happy with. Until then, my friends.

Update: Our post is now up on Kiehl’s Skin Care Products for Men.

The Evolution of Skin Care for Men

August 13, 2009

There was a time not so long ago when one didn’t talk about men’s skin care. It was the equivalent of Fight Club for cosmetics. Back in those days, the homosexual community, always on the cutting edge of advancing men’s fashion, was were you went to find any man willing to invest time in taking care of his skin. Your average guy had nothing to do with the stuff.

Along came Ben Affleck and an assortment of other media-proclaimed “metrosexuals” and, suddenly, skin care for men became a bit more main-stream (along with hair treatment, facials, manicures and the like). Again, not the standard fare of your average guy. You didn’t sit around with your buddies chugging beer while watching the Bears and talk about what kind of skin care product you were using.

As I write this, we’re more than half way through 2009 and things have changed. Oh, don’t get me wrong, you still won’t find most of us sitting around talking about skin care while cheering on our favorite team, but it is also no longer a subject reserved strictly for minority groups like the gay community, Hollywood elite or desperate, acne sufferers. Skin care for men as become more main stream and accepted than ever before. Why the shift?

One could argue, perhaps, that we’ve evolved beyond outdated male stereotypes and are simply a smarter gender than before, but I think that’s giving us more credit than we deserve. I’m more inclined to think that the overwhelming evidence of accumulated sun damage plays a part in our putting the health of our skin ahead of our fragile male egos. After years of basking in the Sun’s rays at the beach and the prematurely aged faces we see staring back at us in the mirror, we finally “get it.”

Further compounding matters is a very competitive job market. With fewer jobs to support hungry would-be employees, older workers are finding themselves in fierce competition for jobs with younger candidates. It would be nice to believe we live in a country where silly biases favoring the young and healthy don’t exist, but that’s just not the case. More than ever before in recent memory, simply looking younger and healthier is actually an important weapon in your job-search arsenal. You could fairly say that the economy has done wonders to promote the virtues of men’s skin care.

Whether your motivation is vanity, improved self confidence, apparent age reduction, fighting wrinkles, protecting your skin from the sun, protecting your skin from pollution or just the urge to take better care of yourself, it is perfectly acceptable to find a few skin care products in a man’s medicine cabinet beyond those designed for acne or other medical conditions. In other words, guys, it’s ok to want to look better or to want to feel better about your appearance.

I bring this up because I think it’s important for us to get beyond those lingering hang-ups and to make the promise that we won’t be neglecting a male audience as we transition into a blog full of health, beauty and skin care product reviews. Though the majority of the topics covered will be for women’s products (simply by virtue of there being so many more of them to review) our male readers will find ample advice and suggestions here to meet their needs as well. We hope you’ll check back soon as we get underway.
